I’ve gone through many brands, and I just can’t find one that works for me. Some irritate my skin (I have psoriasis), and others have ingredients I’m not comfortable with. I’ve tried brands like Native, Dove, Secret, Tom’s, Jason’s, and Old Spice but have had no luck.
Anyone have suggestions for deodorants that are effective and gentle on sensitive skin?
I gave up on regular deodorants in high school and finally found a routine that works for me. It was a bit of trial and error, but here’s what I settled on:
Detox: I started with weekly clay masks for my armpits for about 3-6 months, using Aztec Secret or NOW Solutions European Clay Powder for sensitive skin. It helps reset things.
Washing: I use benzoyl peroxide (like Panoxyl) to wash my armpits. I usually apply the 10% version, let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing, and it really helps with odor.
Daily Routine: I use acid-based toners as deodorant, The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid, any 2% BHA toner, or Mandelic Acid. A friend even swears by using lime or lemon juice. Just avoid formulas with too many humectants since they make you feel sweaty.
Post-Gym: I recently started using Naturium The Energizer Mandelic Acid Wash. Great for after workouts and keeps me fresh.
The detox phase was rough, but after a while, my body adjusted, and now my natural odor is manageable even in hot weather (I live in Florida!).
Some deodorants I did like in the past were CHAI Crystal Deo Stick and Drunk Elephant’s deodorant. Good luck, OP!
This is solid advice. I did a similar thing, and my armpits have been way less smelly. I’ve also read that if you have onion-like BO, it might mean you’re low on magnesium. I take a magnesium supplement daily, and it’s helped a lot.
I agree, it’s hard to find something that works without those hormone-disrupting ingredients. My go-to for smelling nice is Donna Karan Cashmere Mist too; they even have an aluminum-free option.
Unscented Ban roll-on is great. I pair it with Panoxyl Bar soap in the shower to help get rid of bacteria and odor. I let the Panoxyl sit on my armpits for a couple of minutes before rinsing, then apply Ban after drying off. Works well for me.
I’ve been using Hume deodorant, and it’s been fantastic. The scents are nice and not overpowering, and it actually works! I have sensitive skin and haven’t had any issues. My teenager uses it too, and it’s been the only thing that works for them without irritation.
I swear by acid-based deodorants like Lume. They work for me, have no irritants (as far as I know), and keep me fresh for days. I use an alcohol wipe on my pits before applying, and it’s been a game-changer!
Degree Men 48hr antiperspirant in Cool Rush is great when I need something with aluminum for dryness. If I’m just at home, I use Lone unscented deodorant—it’s more natural and doesn’t make me break out.
