I often see women out in public who look effortlessly put together and beautiful. Everything about their appearance seems perfect, and I can’t help but wish I could be like that. Then I catch a glimpse of myself and feel like my outfit isn’t working, my makeup has faded, my skin looks dull, and my hair is a mess. How do they manage to look good all the time? Is it all about confidence?

In my 44 years, I’ve noticed that these women often grew up around mothers, aunts, and sisters who were also very invested in their appearance. It’s something they learn early on and it becomes second nature to them.

Absolutely agree! My mum was always clean, neat, tidy, and well-dressed, but she didn’t teach me much about how to look after myself. It took me a long time to figure out what I needed to do to make myself presentable.

I grew up differently from my mom and sister, with three brothers and a focus on counting blessings if you had your health. My mom could get ready in 10 minutes, which frustrated me as a teen. Over time, I appreciated my genetic blessings and the healthy habits instilled in me, like eating clean, staying active, and valuing intelligence. These contributed to my overall well-being and confidence.

Despite being a girly-girl in a family that didn’t emphasize appearance, I developed my own self-care routines. This helped me avoid superficial trends and focus on being the best version of myself at every stage. Everyone has their unique mix of blessings, and it’s important to recognize and appreciate them. People are often too hard on themselves, but self-care has cumulative benefits that can be surprising.

My mom didn’t care much about appearances and didn’t mind if I was a hot mess, but now I’m put together and confident. Sometimes it works out the opposite way!

In my opinion, looking ‘effortless’ actually takes a lot of effort. It usually involves a significant amount of time and money to look put together and maintain that appearance.
